How To Prepare For A Sewer Drain Cleaning

Reading Time: 4 minutes

Sewer blockages can cause a multitude of problems for your household. When drain clogs occur, the old water and waste have no place to exit and it is left to sit. Not only will this bring an unfortunate smell, but the fumes from the built-up waste are toxic and unhealthy for your home’s inhabitants. Art Rooter, Sewer & Drain Cleaning are experts in clogged drains and we’re here to tell you everything you need to know about a sewer drain cleaning. This includes how to tell when you need a service and the various methods there are to consider depending on the problem you’re having.

Signs You Need A Sewer Drain Cleaning

When a sewer clog occurs, it can be difficult (depending on the set-up of your home) to locate the main drain in order to rectify the issue. At Art Rooter, Sewer & Drain Cleaning, we recommend regular plumbing maintenance to avoid drastic repairs and issues that may pop up such as drain clog. In saying that, drain clogs may catch you off guard and you may be experiencing some effects of a blockage.

There are a few indicators that could mean you are dealing with a drain clog:

  • Bad Odors

A bad-smelling drain is a pretty obvious sign that everything is not right with your plumbing. Stagnant water that is not filtered through your pipes or backed-up gunk that has been sitting is bound to smell at some point.

  • Pooling Water

Pooling water could also be an indication of something more serious so, if you notice any puddles of water in your yard, it’s time for a drain clean. It is likely that there will be a bad odor coming from these puddles too.

  • Slow Drainage

If water washing down your drains seems to take longer to disappear, it may be because there is a blockage clogging up the free flow. You’ll notice this in the shower, the kitchen sink, the bathroom sink, and possibly in the bathtub.

  • Water Back-ups

Excess air in the drainage system will cause water to bubble up in different parts of your plumbing system when you’re draining water. For example, if you flush the toilet and the shower drain gurgles, or you put on your washing machine and the toilet bubbles, it suggests that there is an issue in your sewer line that is forcing the water back up.

  • Regular Clogging

If you are experiencing clogging issues on a daily or weekly basis, you’ll want to call in a professional to get this looked at right away. The longer you leave a problem like this, the more damage is caused. DIY drain cleaning is acceptable as long as it actually works, and you don’t find yourself doing it too often. If this is the case, save yourself the money, time, and effort and get it fixed the right way to prevent any further damage.

Methods For Sewer Drain Cleaning

Different clogs will be addressed using a few popular methods. Snake drain cleaning is a common solution, however, the method that is used will depend on the extremity of the clog as well as the location of your main drain and accessibility.

  • Chemical Drain Cleaning

Chemical drain cleaning makes use of solid or liquid chemicals that dissolve clogged up contents in your drains.

While these chemicals can be easy to use and relatively effective, they are not the safest option. Chemical drain cleaners can be toxic, especially to small children and animals. The harshness of some of these cleaners can also cause damage to your plumbing system. A safer option for a liquid drain cleaner would be eco-friendly products like Bio-Clean®. Bio-Clean® consists of a combination of natural bacteria and enzymes that essentially “eat up” any organic matter that is stuck in your drain. These living organisms will travel where they need to and dissolve any gunk throughout your plumbing pipes. In other words, it is not limited to the pull of gravity such as other liquid or solid chemical cleaners.

  • Hydro Jetting

Hydro jetting makes use of high-pressure water streams to unclog blocked drains. The hose that is used produces up to 4,000 PSI (measurement of pressure) and is placed inside the drain itself. Hydro jetting is beneficial because it is able to blast through clogged up hair, food, and grease due to the high-pressure.

  • Snake Drain Cleaning

Snake drain cleaning makes use of a thick, long tool that is able to move through plumbing pipes easily because of its flexibility. This is also known as a plumbing auger. The auger has a hand crank on one end and a corkscrew-like device on the other end. The corkscrew end, which is the more flexible end, is placed inside the drain and the hand crank is used to send the auger further down the drain until it reaches the gunk that is causing the clog. The movement of drilling is able to effectively remove plant intrusions causing clogs and disintegrates clumps of waste to allow free flow of water again.
